Robert Keohane är en av huvud teoretikerna bakom ny liberalismen.
Ny liberalisterna har en tro på att överstatliga institutioner är det som man ska studera när den internationella politiken ska studeras. Det hela går ut på att stater överlåter en del av sin suveränitet till någon överstatlig institution och det gör staterna för att dom ser att det i slutänden kommer att gynna dom. Ett bra exempel på en sådan utveckling är EU där staterna gett upp en del av sin suveränitet för att det finns regler som garanterar att även andra länder som ger upp sin suveränitet gör det på liknande villkor. Att reglerna åtföljs ska de överstatliga instituitonerna säkerställa och det är här som Keohane och andra nyliberaler menar att styrkan ligger i den internationella politiken och det är här som fokus bör läggas för en fredlig utveckling av den internationella politiken.
Även handel är något som ska se till att känder blir beroende av varandra och därför inte vill ingå i krig mot varandra då förlusterna skulle bli för stora. Denna beronde ställning kallas för interdependens och det är något som nyliberaler är mycket måna om i sina teorier.
Det här var en mycket kort sammanfattning av den internationella politikens mest fredliga, och enligt mig mest åtråvärda teori, nyliberalismen.

Hi Janne W. Thanks for the introduction. I saw the interview with him that you recommended and noticed the fact that he doesn't see that cooperation comes out of harmony but that it comes out of conflict, and that point of view kind of got me thinking not just about national politics but about how cooperation really is perceived in in the general every day life, in work, at home in school everywhere. Where there is a conflict there is a need for generating some kind of cooperation. Conflict has a negative ring to it. But it really shouldn't. Cooperation isn't necessarily closer to the word harmony than it is to conflict, but a lot of people seem to think this and therefore evade confrontation. We should take the negativity out of the word conflict, because it challenges us as individuals to think again and find a solution or even cooperate.

The problem in world politics, as i see it, is that to many states today think in the terms of conflict, and use it as un excuse to abbuse smaller states in their craving for power. I like to think that conflict is a way to resolve problems, but the neo liberal way of thinking promotes for a thing called the democratic peace. This theori acknowledge that states do use force against eachother in theire demand for power on the international arena, but they also like to think that democratic states very often resolve their problems without the use of force becuase they are democratic.
In terms of using cooperations as a way to understand how conflicts can be both avoided and resolved is a healthy ideal that should be used in politics and in everyday life. But we do need to have in minde that states and individulas in most ways are selfish thinking elements, and that the real world is much more complex then any academic theori.
The international politics needs to focus more on international coperations and accept them as a way to get to terms with the unbalanced economic and social needs of the world today.

Indeed politics and economics tend to focus on personal advantage, especially economics. Since they work in symbiosis both parts are at least partly dependent on eachother. It's clear that it's hard to make anyone give away parts of their economical or political power for nothing and unless there is something to win this type of charity is not to be expected. The enforcement of security in the balance of trade by efficiently deleting war as a factor and also by sharpening the laws of trade is one way to make influential political and economical actors agree to giving up some of their power simply becouse it benifits them. There is no bigger benifitiary of a secure and stabile market than them. Once achieving this you have the foundation for starting a real and sincere cooperation between states and countries.
